Alan D. Jarvis
Most Excellent Companion Alan D. Jarvis was born in Cook’s Cove, Nova Scotia, (population 42, if everybody was home). He was the youngest of 6 children born to the late James L. and Hilda G. (Worth) Jarvis. He attended Guysborough High School and Point Edward Vocational School in Cape Breton where he obtained his welding trade. During his childhood, Alan’s father was the Lighthouse Keeper at the entrance of Guysborough Harbour on the Chedabucto Bay. Many interesting experiences were had when they spent the winter months in the lighthouse. |
In January 1971, Alan began his commercial traveling career with Nova Welding Supplies of New Minas, N. S. This career would last, with various employers, for the next 44 years. Alan spent the last 18 years at Robert K. Buzzell’s in Moncton, N.B. which was the highlight of his career.
Alan is married to Lady Gail (MacIntyre) and has two children: Jason (Mary), who lives in Fort Frances, Ontario and Stephanie (Colin Young) of Fall River, N.S. They are very proud of their only grandson, Conal of Fort Frances, Ontario.
When not away on Masonic business, Alan can be found on the golf course or in his woodworking shop. When asked what he makes the most of, he simply replies “Sawdust”.
Masonry has played a very important part in Most Excellent Companion Jarvis’s life. His father, James was raised as a Master Mason in the Eastern Light Lodge # 72 of Guysborough and served as Worshipful aster in 1958. His only brother, James R. (Buster) Jarvis was raised in Bedford Lodge #104 and was Worshipful Master in 1988. Buster was also affiliated with Eastern Light #72 where he served as Worshipful Master and later as Secretary. Alan’s parents were charter members of the Chedabucto Chapter # 43 Order of the Eastern Star in Guysborough where they served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron.
M. E. Comp. Alan was raised in Kentville Masonic Lodge # 58 in April of 1982. He has held most of the Lodge offices. He became Worshipful Master in 1990 and served this position again in 2006. He was District Director of Ceremonies in 2011/12 and in 2012/13 as District Deputy Grand Master for Kings District. Alan is currently serving as President of the Kentville Masonic Association.
In 2001, he became a Shriner with Philae Temple, Halifax, N.S. In 2005, he assumed the position of Ceremonial Potentate, which he held until 2016. He served 3 terms as Director on the Philae Temple Executive. Alan has also served as President of the Eastern Valley Shrine Club.
M. E. Comp. Alan Jarvis joined Cornwallis Chapter #26 in 2004 and became Most Excellent High Priest in 2009 and again in 2013. In 2014, he was appointed Grand Master of the 1st Veil of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Nova Scotia. He was installed as Grand Scribe in 2015, Grand King in 2016 and installed as Grand High Priest in 2017.
In March of 2012, Alan joined Adoniram Council # 10 of Wolfville, N. S. He received his Royal Master Degree on March 22nd, 2012 and his Select Master on April 26th, 2012. He became a Royal Ark Mariner on May 29th, 2012 with M. J. A. Wagner Lodge in Halifax, N. S. In April of 2017, Alan joined the Grand Conclave of the Order of Secret Monitor of Canada, Nova Scotia Conclave #6.
Most Excellent Companion Jarvis looks forward to his year as Grand High Priest and the many new friends he will make in his travels.
