Most Excellent Companion Michael G.C Lutes
Born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Michael grew up in Mahone Bay, attending Elementary and High School there, graduating in 1971. He joined the RCMP in April 1972 and underwent training in Regina SK. His 30 year policing career involved working at detachments in Ontario; (Simcoe, London, Kitchener, Bowmanville and Milton), retiring in 2002 to Blockhouse, NS. He and Margot currently reside in Bridgewater.
Michael married Margot, his junior high school sweetheart in 1975, and they recently celebrated their 49th Anniversary. (57th ‘First Date’ Anniversary) His Masonic career began in London in September 1984 when he was Initiated; Passed in January 1985 and Raised in April 1985 in The Tuscan Lodge #195. He served in all offices (except Secretary, Treasurer and Inner Guard) and was installed Master of the lodge in 1992. |
Upon his retirement back to NS, he affiliated with Unity Lodge #4 in Lunenburg and was installed Master in 2006, 2016 and again in 2023. In 2006 he was appointed Grand Sword Bearer and in 2012 & 2017 District Grand Chaplain for the District of Lunenburg/Queens. He was appointed Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia in 2016, 2021 & 2023.
Michael began his journey in York Rite Masonry in 2003, receiving his MMM, VPM, MEM and HRA Degrees in LaHave Chapter #17, Bridgewater. He progressed through the offices and in 2007 was installed MEHP receiving the Order of High Priesthood at Grand Chapter in 2008. At the 2009 Annual Communication he was appointed Grand Master of the 1st Veil. He was appointed Grand Chaplain in 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016 and in 2019 as District Grand Superintendent for District #1. At the 2022 Annual Communication he was elected Grand Scribe; in 2023 Grand King; and in 2024 installed as Most Excellent Grand High Priest. Since his installation as GHP he has received honorary appointments as Past Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Newfoundland and Labrador; and Past First Grand Principal of the Grand Chapter of New Brunswick.
In 2023, Michael was admitted to Austin Bentley Council #15, Supreme Grand Council of the Eastern Jurisdiction of Canada – Royal & Select Masters, located in Annapolis Royal. He subsequently received the degrees of Select Master and Super Excellent Master. He has recently been elected Principal Conductor of the Works.
In 2004, he was inducted into Nova Scotia Conclave No. 6 - Order of Secret Monitor of Canada or Brotherhood of David and Jonathan. In 2015, Michael was installed Supreme Ruler of the Conclave and in 2017 & 2018 he was appointed Grand Sword Bearer. In 2019 was appointed Grand Director of Ceremonies; in 2022 elected Grand Counsellor; and in 2023 Grand Chancellor, the office he will hold until Grand Conclave in 2025.
Michael was elected to the Masonic Foundation of Nova Scotia - Board of Directors in 2014, 2017, 2020 and again in 2023. He has held the office of Board Chair since 2017.
He remains very active in all his Masonic pursuits and has adopted Freemasonry as a ‘Lifestyle’; a lifestyle supported by his most ardent fan ‘Margot’.
Our MEGHP’s theme for his term of office is: “Honour Your Obligations”, encouraging every Companion and Brother to reflect upon the promises made while kneeling at the Altar of Freemasonry.
