Most Excellent Companion J. Hugh Palmer was born in Westville, Nova Scotia on November 5, 1948. He married his wife, Anne in June of 1978 and has raised a daughter and a son.
Hugh is a member of The Holy Name Parish. He has been an active member of the Westville Minor Sports coaching/trainer staff for some years as well as an active member of the Westville Gentlemen's League. He has also been a strong force 'between the pipes' for the Police All Star hockey team.
Hugh has chosen a career as a police constable with the Town of Trenton's police department since 1976. He has been an assest to the Town serving on many community based committees. He is most proud of his work on the Emergency Response Team since it establishment.
Hugh became a mason in 1988 when he joined Western Star Lodge No. 50 in Westville, Nova Scotia. He served as Worshipful Master of the Lodge in 2004 and now is Marshal. He also affiliated with New Caledonia Lodge No. 11 in Pictou, in 1996 and served as Master in 1999. He has been secretary of the Lodge since 2001.
Hugh also held the position of Grand Director of Ceremonies in 2004/05.
In the year, 1991, Hugh joined Royal Arch Masonry in St. John's Chapter No. 8 in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Hugh served as High Priest in 1995 and 1996 and was the Assistant Grand Chaplain for District No. 2 in 1998 & 1999. Hugh was then installed as the District Grand Superintendent for District No. 2 for 2001 and 2002. He was then elected Grand Scribe in 2005. He then went on to be Grand King in 2006 and in 2007 was installed Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia. He is also an Honorary Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as an Honorary Grand First Principal of the Grand Chapter of New Brunswick. Companion Palmer joined Malta Preceptary Nov 27 in 1998 and now holds the position of Constable. He then entered in Orient Council No. 5 Royal and Select Masters in 1999 and served as Thrice Illustrious Master in 2004. He then became a Charter Member of Cobequid Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners in 2003.
In 1999 Hugh was admitted to Royal William Conclave No. 32 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and now serves as Jr. General. In 2006 Companion Palmer joined the Nova Scotia York rite College No. 132.
It has also been Hugh's motto to do his best at whatever undertaking he partakes in and makes a special effort to give back to masonary some of the knowledge and satisfaction which he has received. Hugh would like to credit his father John George Palmer for fostering an interest in the Masonic Order and Earl Crockett MacDonald for mentoring him.
